【作品制作の流れ】
ロケーションを探す
どのような石があるか、
地形はどうなっているか、
時間による陽の当たり方などを確認します。
↓
石を拾う
作品に使用する石を選びます。
大きさ、形、色、模様などを考慮して
少し多めに確保します。
↓
石に付いている付着物を落とす
石には泥や鳥のフンがついていることがある為、
タワシできれいにします。
↓
積み上げる
背景に対してどの位のサイズで
どのような全体像にするかを
積みながら決めていきます。
左右のバランス、
前後のバランス、
回旋のバランスを感じて
それを積みながら整理していく作業になります。
ひとつの作品を積み上げるのに
約４時間から８時間程かかり、
その日のうちに完成しないこともあります。
全体像や背景との重なりが良くない場合は
積み直すこともあります。

光と構図を選び撮影をする
積み上げた石をさまざまな角度から見て
撮影する位置を探します。
ロケーションを探す段階で
陽の当たり方を確認しているので、
それも考慮して構図を決めていきます。
山に太陽が隠れると
光量は安定した状態で減っていくので、
印象的な光がない場合は
別日に積み上げる段階から
やり直すこともあります。

崩して帰宅
積み上げた石は
自然の景観の印象を大きく変えます。
自然には自然な石の置かれ方があり、
人の手が加わっていると
その不自然な違和感は分かるものです。
強い風が吹けば勝手に崩れ、
大雨が降れば石は流れていくものですが、
バーベキューをしたら片付けて帰るような感覚で、
崩して少しならしてから
帰ることにしています。

撮影した画像の編集
撮影した画像を
その時に感じていた印象を元に
色や明るさ、質感を調整していきます。
↓
印刷
写真作品に使用する用紙やサイズに合わせて
テストプリントと画像の調整をしながら印刷します。

タイトルと解説を付ける
作品タイトルは
現地で決めていることもありますが、
その時の印象と時間が経って客観的に作品を観た時の
印象にズレがあることも多く、
改めてタイトルと解説を考え直します。
構想段階から含めるとひとつの作品が完成するまでに
1ヶ月~2年程かかります。

Find the location
Find out what kind of stones are there,
what the terrain is like,
and how the sun hits it at different times.
↓
Pick up stones
Select stones for my artwork.
Secure a few extra stones based on
size, shape, color, and pattern.
↓
Clean off any residue on the stones
Remove mud and bird droppings
from the stones with a brush.
↓
Stack up
While stacking up the stones,
decide how big they should be in relation
to the background
and what the overall image should be.
This is a process of balancing
left and right, front and back, and rotation.
It takes about four to eight hours to build up
a single piece of work,
and it may not be completed by the end of the day.
In some cases,
the work may have to be re-stacked
if it does not fit well
with the overall image or the background.

Selecting light and composition for photography
Look at the piles of stones from different angles
to find the best location to shoot.
Since I have already checked the sunlight
when looking for a location,
I take that into consideration
when deciding on the composition.
As the sun hides behind the mountains,
the amount of light decreases at a steady rate.
If there is no impressive light,
I may start over from the stacking stage
on another day.

Breaking it down and going home
Stacked stones can greatly change the impression
of a natural landscape.
Nature has a natural way of placing stones,
and you can see how unnatural
and uncomfortable it is
to have human hands on them.
If a strong wind blows,
the stones will collapse on their own,
and if it rains heavily, they will drift away.
I try to clean them up
as if I were cleaning up after a barbecue,
and then go home.

Editing the captured images
Adjust the color, brightness,
and texture of the images based
on the impression you had at the time.
↓
Printing
Print test prints and adjust images to
fit the paper and size
used for the photographic work.
↓
Adding a title and description
Sometimes I decide on the title of the work on site.
However, there is often a discrepancy between
the impression at the time and the impression
when I look at the work objectively after
some time has passed.
I reconsider the title and description.
It takes about one month to two years
to complete a piece of work,
including from the conceptual stage.
